These are very small creatures, primarily seen hovering around the wild lupine plant fields and has been declared as endangered (‘At Risk G3’) by NatureServe. The Karner blue's lifecycle depends completely on one plant, the wild lupine. There are two generations, (that means two hatches), of Karner blue butterfly eggs each year. In April, the first group of caterpillars hatch from last year's eggs and the caterpillars feed only on the leaves of the lupine.
The Karner blue butterfly experienced drastic declines in the 1970s and 1980s. It is now believed to be extirpated in Illinois, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Maine and New Hampshire, and in the Canadian province Ontario. It is listed as endangered by the U.S. government.
